Eastern Community Sports hub opens soon

Exciting news to share! The Eastern Community Sport and Recreation facility will reopen on May 22 and will be home to Canterbury Korfball.  The former school gym was wrecked by vandals and has been bought back from the brink and reopened as the community sports hub for east Christchurch.  Read more about the refurbishment and facilities. 


Looking for volunteers

Kia ora KC whanau! We have just recently had our AGM and are getting stuck into Winter League for the year - so are looking to fill some positions to help us achieve all we do in our community.

Treasurer - 12 month position - reporting at monthly committee meetings

 

Excel Genius - 1-2 weeks of commitment of setting up a document and teaching our competitions team how to use it

 

Referee Development Coordinator - ongoing position - reporting to the head of technical sub-committee

 

All of the roles are volunteer positions.

Christchurch South finishes on top in Korfball Cup!


 At the end of Term Two Korfball Canterbury held the first year 7/8 competition of the year at Celebration Stadium. Around 180 players in 16 teams from seven different schools participated. 

At the end of the day the top four were: 
1) Christchurch South Intermediate 
2) Kirkwood Intermediate 
3) St Martins 
4) Pegasus Bay School

With an amazing buzzer beater from halfway to finish it off, the result of the final was 9-2. St Martins finished third by beating Pegasus Bay after a penalty shoot-out.

The tournament team selected was as follows:-
Alfie Bell (Kirkwood), Finley Blyth (Pegasus Bay), Will Hull (Christchurch South), Ben Tiatia (Te Waka Unua), Amelie Martin (Christchurch South), Hannah Pateman (St Martins), Lily Perrin (Pegasus Bay), Kaingaroa Sadaraka Parura (Kirkwood).

Winnie Bagoes City provided meal vouchers for each of those selected for the tournament team. Big thanks to them, and to all our volunteers who helped make the day such a success

Korfball - the mixed gender sport sweeping Canterbury


This summer we are looking into sports you wouldn't typically hear about on the sports bulletin - and this morning we are looking into Korfball - which for those who don't know is similar to basketball and netball.

The chair of Korfball New Zealand, Rob Smith, says the sport is growing quickly and our players are becoming more and more competitive on the international stage.

2019 Winter Competition


Congratulations to the winners of the 2019 Winter Competition: CCKC in the A grade, and Red Giants in the high school grade. Red Giants had a particularly tough final, coming out on top at the end over Cashmere.
Individual awards were as follows:

Most Improved Player, Male – Liam Day (CCKC Jr)
Top Scorer, Female – Georgia Fitzpatrick (Red Giants), with 42 points
Top Scorer, Male – Jeric Sta Rita (CCC), with 37 points 
Most Valuable Player, Female – Tayla Hardy (CCKC Jr)
Most Valuable Player, Male – Levi Ferguson (Red Giants)

A Grade

Rookie of the year, Female – Katelyn Huata (Ōraka)
Rookie of the year, Male – Monty Kemp (CCKC)
Most Improved Female – Michelle Tapp (Scorchers)
Most Improved Male – Abel van Bruchem (Red Dwarves)
Top Scorer, Female – Chelsea Ruiz (Scorchers), with 50 points

South Island Secondary Schools Championship


The 2019 South Island Secondary School Championship, featuring 13 A Grade and 10 B Grade teams competing at Avonside-Shirley school gym and Pioneer Stadium respectively in September.

One highlight was the attendance of the Victoria University team, participating as a guest in the A grade. At the end of an excellent weekend of korfball, Cashmere High School had their hands on the A Grade trophy, while St Margaret’s College was the winner of the B Grade.
